GAC AION AION LX

2026-09-26 09:40:02

The GAC AION AION LX is a flagship all-electric mid-size SUV launched in 2019 by GAC AION (formerly GAC New Energy), once touted by the carmaker as a "luxury intelligent supercar SUV". Serving as AION’s early vanguard into the premium segment, the AION LX marked an ambitious foray into technological innovation and upmarket product positioning.

Model Overview

The AION LX is positioned as a mid-size luxury pure-electric SUV, engineered to establish an upmarket brand presence in the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) segment through class-leading driving range and an advanced intelligent cabin experience.

Market Tags: Luxury intelligent SUV, long driving range, extended wheelbase, tech-laden cabin.

Design & Dimensions: The SUV measures 4,835 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a 2,920 mm wheelbase. Its exterior boasts an aggressive, sporty styling, while the cabin is appointed with premium materials such as Nappa leather upholstery and genuine aluminium trim, highlighting a seamless blend of technology and luxury.

Core Highlights: Built on GAC New Energy’s second-generation dedicated GEP 2.0 EV platform, the AION LX delivered segment-leading driving range at launch, courtesy of a high-capacity battery pack and a highly integrated electric drive system.

Development History

Origins: In 2019, following the commissioning of GAC New Energy's smart eco-plant, the AION LX made its official debut. The model was engineered to dispel "EV range anxiety", aiming to capture market share in the premium mid-to-large SUV segment with its extensive range and upmarket design.

Key Milestones:

2020–2021: Backed by robust performance and commendable driving range, the AION LX garnered steady recognition among buyers within its target segment.

2022 (AION LX Plus): The brand rolled out an upgraded variant, the AION LX Plus, spotlighting its proprietary "Sponge Silicon Negative Electrode Plate Battery Technology". This breakthrough pushed its CLTC-rated range past the 1,000 km threshold for the first time, setting a major technological benchmark in the electric SUV domain.

Current Status (2026): Following strategic realignments within the carmaker, GAC AION's premium offensive has shifted towards the dedicated "Hyptec" luxury sub-brand and its next-generation modular architectures. The AION LX has now reached the end of its lifecycle, gradually fading from mainstream showroom lineups. Nonetheless, as a pioneering effort in brand elevation, its engineering pathway provided vital technical groundwork for subsequent models.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: At launch, the AION LX went head-to-head with rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, NIO ES6, and mid-size electric SUVs from legacy luxury marques. Its primary hurdle remained brand equity, facing challenges in matching the prestige and pricing power command of established luxury marques.

Customer Feedback: Early owners praised its cabin space, ride comfort, and overall battery range. However, with the rapid pace of EV innovation, its infotainment interactivity and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) were eventually eclipsed by newer-generation models such as the Hyptec series. Furthermore, early reports concerning real-world range achievement rates also drew attention within the industry.

Core Technologies

Sponge Silicon Negative Electrode Plate Battery Technology: Serving as the cornerstone of the AION LX Plus, this tech utilises high-density anode materials to drastically elevate cell energy density, delivering an ultra-long range of over 1,000 km without expanding overall vehicle dimensions.

High-Performance "Four-in-One" Integrated Electric Drive: Featuring a dual-motor, two-speed setup, the integrated architecture maximises drivetrain efficiency, achieving an impressive 0-100 km/h acceleration time in the 2.9-second bracket.

Smart Driving Hardware: The Plus variant incorporates second-generation variable-focus LiDAR with dynamic vertical resolution adjustment, engineered to support Navigation Driving Assist (NDA) across both highway and urban driving scenarios.

Intelligent Cockpit System: Powered by the ADiGO system and paired with a large curved LCD display, the setup offered a cutting-edge digital user experience at the time of its release.

Future Plans

As of 2026, the AION LX is no longer a core focus of GAC AION’s R&D expenditure. The company’s strategic focus has fully transitioned to a dual-brand approach: "AION" for the mainstream mass market and "Hyptec" for the high-end technology segment. GAC AION has systematically integrated the chassis tuning, high-voltage platform architecture, and battery safety expertise gained from the AION LX into Hyptec’s flagship SUV lineup. The AION LX currently focuses on aftersales support for existing owners, ensuring genuine spare parts availability and continuous over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
